What is Dry Eye?
Dry eye is a condition where the eyes are not able to produce tears properly, making your eyes feel dry and experience pain. There are several symptoms of dry eye disease such as a stinging or burning sensation in the eye, swollen, red eyelids, blurry vision, tiredness of the eyes, tearing, and red eyes. Symptoms vary on a case by case basis, as dry eye could be caused by a number of factors. The symptoms worsen at the end of the day, especially after spending long periods of time in front of a computer screen. If left untreated, dry eye can lead to more serious eye condition such as infection or impaired vision.
Treatment
Since dry eye can be attributed to different factors, tests should first be done to determine the cause of dry eye. Ocular surface dryness, tear production, tear function, tear osmolarity, and visual clarity are measured by these tests. It can also determine whether there is damage to the cornea or the conjunctiva. Through these tests, the cause of dry eye can be detected, and appropriate treatment can be applied by a dry eye clinic Calgary.
Current medicated eye drops approved by Health Canada are RESTASIS and XIIDRA. RESTASIS is an eye drop that increases natural tear production of the eyes. This is the common prescribed medication for moderate cases. XIIDRA is prescribed to help treat inflammation of the eye surface that causes pain and discomfort. In as early as two weeks, there will be noticeable improvements of the condition

Prevention
To lessen the risk of having dry eye disease, always wear protective eyewear whenever engaging in activities where the eyes are exposed to wind such as biking. During winter, always turn on the humidifier. Stop smoking or at the very least, lessen it. If you do not smoke, avoid places where smokers stay and smoke.
